Job Description

As a PhD student you will be investigating neurocognitive mechanisms. Visual appearance is an increasingly important factor in the distress experienced by many individuals around the world who fail to meet the beauty standard and body image they have set for themselves. An important factor in this increasing striving for beauty and slimness is the continuous presentation of models with unrealistic, retouched or “photoshopped” features, which represent an unattainable goal for most individuals. The current project is aimed at understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms through which beauty ideals shape the appraisal of our own bodies and those of others, and why some individuals develop body image disturbances while others remain unaffected. Effects of media on body image will be investigated for old and new virtual media (e.g., looking at effects of real and computer generated models), using a variety of experimental techniques (eye-tracking, ERPs, behaviour, fRMI). The PhD student will participate in the graduate program of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), present and publish findings at international conferences and peer reviewed quality journals, and combine scientific findings in a doctoral thesis.

The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student (0,8 FTE) for a period of five years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 3½ years.

Doctorate

Candidates need a Master’s degree in Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Social Psychology, or a related field, and should show a sincere interest in the study of body image and media. A background and experience in conducting psychological experiments (using behaviour, EEG, eye-tracking, and/or neuroimaging techniques) and enrolment in a Research Master’s programme (Behavioural Science or Cognitive Neuroscience or related) are considered an advantage. Candidates need to be proficient in English and must have excellent writing ability.

The Behavioural Science Institute studies individual human behaviour as a function of its social and physical contexts. The central goal of the institute is to gain fundamental insight into the causal factors and regulatory processes that govern individual human behaviour. The BSI is an interdisciplinary endeavour aimed at exploring the aetiology of individual human behaviour. The PhD student will participate in the Media and Behaviour Lab group which involves a collaboration between Social Cognition and Developmental Psychopathology programmes of the BSI. The BSI is equipped with extensive lab facilities including eye tracking, EEG, and virtual reality, and has access to neuroimaging facilities (e.g. fMRI) at the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging in Nijmegen.

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards
The DHPA are highly prestigious, and successful candidates will be considered to have outstanding research potential and will hold the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree as a minimum. The award covers full international student tuition fees plus DHPA scholars should receive at least the minimum Research Council PhD stipend. For the academic year 2009/10 stipend is £13,290.

o Demonstrator opportunities: If you are self-funded or externally-funded, there are opportunities to undertake paid laboratory demonstrator duties.
o Teaching Assistantships: Teaching assistantships are full-time studentships funded by the school in return for some part-time work. Teaching assistants have a scholarship equivalent to the ESPRC scholarship, plus an honorarium for the work they do. Teaching Assistants work part time in term-time, aiding staff in various teaching-related duties. These duties might include supervising laboratories, preparing and marking course work and taking tutorials and examples classes. There may possibly be an opportunity to give a small number of lectures on courses where the material matches your personal expertise. The work should occupy approximately one full day per week. This enables you to be registered for a full time MPhil/PhD.

Conditions of Work
The work as a teaching assistant should occupy a total of about 180 hours plus some preparation time throughout the year, or approximately one full day a week. The TA will be registered for full-time MPhil or PhD. The precise duties are at the discretion of the Director of the Undergraduate School of the School of Computer Science.

Amount of Award
The current amount of the award is living expenses paid at the current EPSRC national minimum rate plus an honorarium (currently £1,575 per annum) in recognition of Teaching Assistant duties. In addition, the School will pay your University fees (at the current home student rate). Teaching Assistantship is a scholarship, not a job. USAID Master Degree Scholarship 2009

Scholarship opportunities to study in the USA for:
• Master`s Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.

Training has long been a key component of the U.S. government`s development program in Indonesia. USAID/ Indonesia plans to support the tradition through the Human and Institutional Capacity Development (HICD) program that will provide academic degree training. The HICD program is structured in a way that will help individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, and the capacity to support Indonesia`s development and the achievement of the Government of Indonesia/USAID` s objectives.

USAID has awarded a contract to the Academy for Educational Development (AED), a U.S. non-government organization (NGO) to support the implementation of the HICD program in Indonesia. AED is now inviting Indonesian citizens to study for Master`s Degrees in the USA in
1) Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management and
2) Water and Sanitation.

1. Master`s Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.
Eligible candidates may come from the Ministry of Forestry, Environment, Development Planning, Research and Development, Finance, Economy or other related government institutions including provincial and district level offices and regulators; civil society groups (Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management Associations, NGOs and Foundations) ; or professionals in fields related to sustainable development with international or local organizations who have strong potential for leadership, research, education, journalism and consultancy in the same field.

Candidates with experience working in geographical areas with high biodiversity conservation value will be prioritized. An indicative list would include Kalimantan, Sumatera, Papua, Sulawesi and NTT.

2. Master`s Degrees in Water and Sanitation.
Eligible candidates may come from related government Institutions, civil society groups (Water and Sanitation Associations, NGOs, and Foundations), water and sanitation professionals/ environmental engineers working in the development sector with international or local organizations, and faculty from schools of Water and Sanitation/Environm ental Engineering at accredited Indonesian universities.

Candidates from the following areas in Indonesia will be prioritized: Aceh, North Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java .
Previous affiliation of the institution with USAID whether as a beneficiary or partner program will be viewed favorably.
